AdultFanFiction.net
AdultFanFiction.net (sometimes abbreviated AFF or AFF.net) is a fan fiction archive site devoted to works of an adult nature. It was founded in 2002 in response to the announcement by FanFiction.net stating that stories rated NC-17 would no longer be permitted.[1] Works are divided into many categories according to the fandom on which they are based, and in particular there is a category devoted to fan fiction based on Ranma ½.
AdultFanFiction.net also hosts a set of forums. These are used for discussion of the site itself, of works archived on the site, and for more general discussions. Participation in the forums requires a separate account and login from the main site, although some forums are available for anonymous perusal.
As of late 2010, the Ranma ½ category on the site has over 170 stories archived. More than a third of those were published (initial chapter posted) within the last year.
History
For a more thorough description of the site's history, see the AdultFanFiction.net page on the Fan History Wiki.[1] In brief, the site was created in 2002 in response to a change in policy at FanFiction.net prohibiting authors from posting stories with an NC-17 (now MA) rating. It has gone through a series of upheavals and management by different persons and groups of people. This reached its head in late 2007 when a large number of moderators resigned during a period of a couple of months. In the last couple of years, management of the site has been — so far — somewhat more stable.
Organization
AdultFanFiction.net is divided up into numerous domains. These include, for example, hp.adultfanfiction.net for Harry Potter fan fiction, movies.adultfanfiction.net for fan fiction based on movies, and inu.adultfanfiction.net for InuYasha fan fiction. The Ranma ½ category is located on the anime.adultfanfiction.net domain.
This division into domains leads to certain consequences. For example, when viewing an author's profile, one sees his profile on a specific domain. Only stories he has posted within that domain are listed on that profile page.
Story listings contain the following information for each story.
- Title of the story.
- Summary, which usually includes keywords such as “D/S” or “Anal.”
- Author, which links to the profile page within the story's domain.
- Rating, which is one of “Adult,” “Adult+” or “Adult++.”
- Number of chapters.
- Date of publication, i.e., when the first (or only) chapter was originally posted.
- Date of last update.
- Date of last edit.
- Total number of hits.
- Total number of reviews, which links to the Reviews page for that story.
- Current voting on story quality, as an average of zero to five stars, together with the number of readers who have cast such votes.
A search function is available from a drop-down menu (named “Member Tools”). It allows for a search on words within the Author, Title, or Summary fields. It is restricted to the domain on which one is currently located.
Author Support
In order to post stories, a potential author must create an account, which involves choice of a pen name and a password. Naturally, one may not choose a pen name which is already in use by another author. Site policy is that any individual may only have one such account, except for certain special circumstances such as collaborations. Creation of a duplicate account will, upon discovery, result in summary deletion of the account with the fewer number of stories.[2]
Stories must be in either text or HTML format in order to be uploaded, unless the author wishes to take the tedious route of typing it directly into a text area within the browser. Only a limited set of basic HTML codes are accepted, such as <p>, <b>, <i> and <center>. The full list is given in the FAQ.[3]
For stories which already exist, the author may change details such as the title or rating. He may manipulate chapters by adding a new chapter, editing an existing chapter, or deleting a chapter. Or he may simply delete the entire story.
The author is permitted to remove reviews of his stories. However, AdultFanFiction.net does not provide any means for an author to directly respond to reviews.[4] In particular, an author is technically not supposed to add reviews to his own stories, whether for the purpose of responding to reviews or for any other reason. It is suggested instead that the author email the reviewer if an email address is available, add a small note containing a response in the next chapter which is posted, or make use of a forum to engage in dialog with readers.
